ME MYSELF & THEM - A group exhibition revolving around the self-portrait
For Eyes On—Month of Photography 2012, "Me Myself & Them"—a group show revolving around the self-portrait—puts the artist front and center.
Self-reflection, self-explication, self-discovery; contemplation, theatrical mise-en-scène, demolition of the self ... which stories does the self-portrait tell us about the artist? What propels artists to take their own photographs?
Everyone has "done it" at some point; some do it again and again; some resolutely make the self-portrait the core of their oeuvre; some use it as a catalyst in their quest for the true self, as a diary of sorts that reveals sometimes intimate glimpses of their own lives.
Others use it to stage certain aspects of their inner lives or to try out variable self-images. Yet the self-portrait is always also the means of a reflection on the artist's personal environment as well as the outside world, representing the self's socially mediated reflection in the mirror, the self-image, that is to say, that the individual forms through interaction with others and socially communicated expectations. Its repetition describes a tentative movement between inside and outside, between the individual and what is foreign to him or her, between the biographical identity and a fictional one—and self-determination in the construction of identity is an important issue of our time.
