Let’s Go—The Big Vacation Boom
Silvia Camporesi, H.H. Capor, Pia Mayer, Elfriede Mejchar, Miriam Laussegger, Peter Wehinger

Every year, an estimated 700 million people around the world take a trip to a foreign country. Cross-border travel makes up 25 to 30 percent of global trade in services. Tourism “flood zones” include places rich in culture and history, metropolitan cities, seashore destinations, and winter sports resorts. Like locusts, the masses come and go in cycles, and what they leave behind as they depart is often a wasteland: depopulated ghost towns between seasons, bare mountainsides once the snow covering the heavily used and prepared ski runs has melted away …

How much genuine interest does the average traveler muster for the culture and unique character of the country he visits? Most people’s taste for adventure is limited. We have become used to encountering the same familiar structures and standards no matter where we go. A maximum of comfort at the lowest possible price is what we demand from our hosts. In this regard, too, the performance-oriented society never truly takes time off.
